How To Draw A Rose

What you'll need:

HB (#2) Pencil, 4B pencil
Eraser
Drawing paper
Drawing surface

To begin with, draw a large oval that will serve as the general shape of your rose. Inside this oval, draw a very small circle that is going to be the center of the rose. The easiest way to draw a rose is by starting from the middle, and working your way to the edge.

Inside the smaller circle, draw a few diagonal lines that will be the center, and most compact, part of the flower.

All these lines crossing each other will give the effect that the inside rose petals are packed tightly together.

There really isn't one single method to drawing rose petals. As I said, there is a learning curve involved in making them look realistic. The best way to draw them is by looking at a photo, or a real rose, and replicating it as close as possible.

To create a realistic rose, we need to extend petals from the center, outward. Each petal is overlapped by the next one (think of shingles on a house).

When drawing the petals of your rose, remember that they get bigger as they move away from the center. Keep drawing petals larger and larger until they start touching the outside of the first circle you drew. See the photo on the left.

Continue drawing larger petals over-top of each other until you have a fully-formed rose. Keep in mind that the larger petals usually fold over outwards.

As you can see, there are usually one or two petals that stick out further from your rose than the rest.

By now you should have a full rose drawn. The only thing left to do is add some shading between the petals to give your rose some volume, and add a stem. And that's that!
