Makar Sankranti

 Makar Sankranti was celebrated with gaiety on Monday. Many took a dip in the Ganga before celebrating the day, popularly known as 'Khichadi or Tila Sankranti' in Bihar, with traditional food items like chura (flattened rice), yoghurt, tilkut and khichadi.

The celebrations had a variety of food, family gatherings, street fairs and music with a few paper kites dotting the city sky.

The Patna Diary Project (PDP) had prepared well in advance for the occasion. "It was a record of sort as we sold 1.75 lakh kg of curd, which was 62.28% more compared to 2011. We also sold 21.5 lakh litres of milk, which was 13.11% more than the last year," said PDP MD Sudhir Kumar Singh on Monday.

The COMPFED had a sale of about 78 lakh litres of milk in Bihar andJharkhand, which was almost 18.5% more than the previous year. Over 2.25 lakh litres of curd was sold, said AGM (marketing) Rajeev Verma. Other local dairies, too, had a roaring sale of milk and curd.

PDP is also organizing a 'Dahi Khao Inam Pao' contest on January 18. The contestants will be given three minutes time to gulp as much curdas possible and the one consuming the maximum will be awarded. There will be separate competition for male and female contestants.

Politicians also joined the festivities with their party workers and friends. Chief minister Nitish Kumar, along with ministers, legislators and parliamentarians joined the feast of dahi-chura-tilkut. RJD supremo Lalu Prasad also hosted the feast. Chura was brought from places like Bhagalpur, Banka, Bhojpur and Buxar while tilkuts and curd were brought from Gaya, Lakhisarai, Sasaram, Munger, Khagaria and Begusarai.
