What to Avoid during Sick Days

The winter months mark the start of the cold and flu season in many countries. The UAE does it differently. Hot summer months and the changes in temperature from efficiently air conditioned buildings cause most of us to catch the common cold. Follow these tips to stay healthy and save your sick days for those must-need duvet days instead.

1. Avoid catching other people’s germs – carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser with you. It is small enough to fit into your Kate Spade purse and handy for those times when you are travelling on the Dubai Metro.

3. Take drugs – what is the point in suffering right? If you feel a cold coming on then take cold and flu relievers. The sooner you take medication the sooner it will begin to work. Always read the label and if symptoms persist consult your doctor.

4. Drink plenty of fluids – water is best but tea and coffee also count as part of your recommended daily fluid intake. Aim to drink 2-2.5 litres per day.

5. When you feel better, start exercising – exercise boosts your immune system and helps prevent illness. Exercise is not recommended during illness.

6. Eat better – the reason you catch colds easily could be due to a poor diet. Fill your plate with vegetables, fish and whole grains and cut out simple sugars and foods high in saturated fats.

7. Sleep more – aim to go to bed between 10-11pm. Studies show that people who have eight high-quality hours of sleep, weigh less and think better. You’ll probably feel happier too.
